THE NFGB (Bakbakan) SYSTEM

The 2009 edition of the annual Bakbakan 10-Stag National Derby has set a new record even before it starts with its whopping P30,000,000.00 guaranteed cash prize – the richest in Philippine cockfighting history.

Since its first staging in 2001, Bakbakan has broken record after record, not only because of the attractive prizes or the affordable entry fees. More than the dream of winning the Bakbakan trophy and the accolade of being the best gamefowl breeder of the land, the sustained drawing power is the fairness, integrity and fair play that the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders has ensured, maintained and improved for Bakbakan through the years.

Let’s look closer to the :

THE NFGB (BAKBAKAN) SYSTEM

as reported by Joey Sy

A) WINGBANDING (Done in the month of April)

1) Cockerels of farms owned by breeder-members of associations affiliated with the NFGB are banded by well trained association members from other localities;

2) The filled up and duly signed stag registry sheets are submitted to the NFGB computer center for encoding;

3) All the data from the stag registry sheets are encoded into the database of the NFGB .

B) THE SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES & SCREENING OF STAGS (Bakbakan Derby Staging from early October to early December)

  1. On site the local association is monitored and aided by a duly assigned NFGB Supervisor from a different association, this is where entries are accepted, recorded, screened and encoded.

  1. The entry submission starts with the members calling the local association with the following details:

a) name of entry; b) name of owners c) 3 no-fight requests***

d) contact numbers; e) wingband numbers of stags f) weight of the stags

Note : No fight requests should me mutual or consensual, which means that an

entry that is requested to have no-fight with should have also requested a no-fight

in return or vice-versa. This and all other relevant info are fed into the matching

program and are regarded by the computer during the matching.

  1. The data is written on entry submission forms then encoded into the computer on site. Trained personnel of the local association with the help of the NFGB supervisor execute this part using computer programs provided by the NFGB.

  1. The breeder's name, association affiliation and stag registry details pop up on the screen after the encoding is done on this NFGB provided program. They are then screened and counter-checked with the data on the stag registry books. Disqualified bands belonging to cocks or stags of previous years or with non-existent bands are discarded and the entries are called for replacements.

  1. The encoded entries are then sent to the NFGB Computer Matching Center in Manila where the NFGB COMPUTER CENTER use its program to match the derby and then send the matched fights back to the local association by EMAIL.

  1. The local association then prepares the sequence of fights. At their own discretion, the local association can set the fights between heavy bettors at primetime in order for them to be able to square off the bets easier with the objective of earning the most plazada from the center bets.

  1. There is no way that the local association may break matches as set at the computer center, as the program provided by the NFGB to the local associations are not enabled to alter the match-ups.

  1. In case of any problems, the NFGB supervisor consults the big bosses of NFGB;

  1. The matched and sequenced fights program is then printed.

  1. The stags are presented to the working committees on the morning of the derby before the fights start for inspections of wingbands and other details pertaining to its stag’s identity as counter checked with the records of NFGB, then leg-banded on site in preparation for the fights later.

C) MONITORING OF FIGHTS AND REPORTING OF ITS OUTCOME:

  1. The NFGB Supervisor monitors the weigh-in, the fight proper and records the results of all the fights, on a prepared form. He also assists the local President in case of disputes.

  1. The NFGB Supervisor records and tabulates the scores and later presents it to the local association President and the cockpit operator for confirmation and endorsement.

  1. The said report of the derby's result is sent to the NFGB Center for recording.

  1. These records from all the eliminations all over the country are fed into the database for counter-checking and verification purposes during the semi-finals. These assure that all those that will proceed to compete in the semis and then in the finals are duly qualified and that their scores are authenticated and protected.

NFGB SET TO BREAK RECORD AGAIN WITH 2009 BAKBAKAN

With 2,210 farms visited across the country wherein a total of 202,708 cockerels were wingbanded, the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders expresses confidence that the 2,000-entry target for this year’s Bakbakan 10-Stag national
Derby will be easily realized. A guaranteed cash prize of P30 million is at stake for the 2009 Bakbakan with the entry fee pegged at P15,000.

“That is just assuming that each farm will field one entry for a 100 percent turn-out” says NFGB President Ricoy Palmares, as he noted that in 2008, a total of 2,203 entries saw action out of 1,972 farms registered for an almost 120% turn-out.

“We are looking forward to a new record”, Palmares added.

Among the 29 member-associations under the NFGB, Panay Gamefowl Breeders Ass’n has the biggest number of farms registered at 210 and the most cockerels banded at 19,719. Based on farms which were submitted for banding in second position is the fast growing Batangas Breeders Club headed by NFGB Vice President for Luzon Fred Katigbak with 146 farms and 14,616 cockerels banded. Third is the just three-year old Rizal Gamefowl Breeders Ass’n with 144 farms and 13,473 birds marked.

The country’s first gamefowl breeders group – the Negros Gamefowl Breeders Association headed by former La Carlota City Mayor Juancho Aguirre is 4th with 132 farms, but 14,048 young stags banded, while the Al Garcia – led Gamefowl Breeders Association of Negros is 5th with 127 and 14,000.

The 2009 Bakbakan will be held from October 10 with several separate elimination events nationwide up to December 3 when undefeated entries take on each other for the crown in the finals set at Araneta Coliseum.
