ALL SET FOR THE NFGB MEDICAL MISSION

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (November 21, 2009)

ALL SET NFGB MEDICAL MISSION

It’s green and go for the scheduled medical, dental and feeding mission set tomorrow from 8:00 – 11:30 a.m. at the San Mateo Cockpit in San Mateo, Rizal which is a project of the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders (NFGB) the office of Gov Jun-Jun Ynares, III M.D. and the Provincial Government of Rizal.

Supporting and assisting the endeavor are Kasama Agri Products & Services, Inc (KAAGPAS), VNJ Distributors, UNILAB which donated medicine thru its sister company Thunderbird Power Feeds and Thunderbird Power Vet.

Also providing valuable assistance are Sabn Miguel Foods Corp; Bmeg, Progressive Laboratories, Goldilocks, Cargill Phils. Inc, Purina, Novarties Healthcare Phils. Inc.; Excellence Gamefowl Specialist, Asenso Pinoy, Sagupaan, Sabong TV, Hataw Pinoy, Tukaan, Pit Games Magazine, Rizal Gamefowl Breeders Association, Batangas Breeders Club, Eastern Visayas Gamefowl Breeders Association, Management & Staff of San Mateo Cockpit, Bgy. Captains of Sta. Ana and Ampid, Parokya ng San Jose de Ampid and the Familia Community Foundation.

In addition to the volunteer medical practitioners from the Rizal Provincial Government and physicians who also have the passion for cockfighting and gamefowl like Dr. Boy Tuazon of Pateros, also extending their services are members of the Beta Sigma Fraternity – Manila East Chapter led by Dr. Buddy Quililan thru the intercession of Dr. Rex Iwuanyanwu.

No less than 1,000 patients are expected to be served, majority of which were affected by the typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

BAKBAKAN 2009 ENTERS HOME STRECTH

After almost two months of more than 70 separate events all over the country, the record-breaking 2009 Bakbakan enters the home stretch with the series of finals competition starting on November 24 & 26 at the Araneta Coliseum; Nov. 27 at Pasay Cockpit; Nov. 30 at Makati Coliseum and back at the Big Dome on Dec. 1.

The grand finals wherein all undefeated entries (with 5.5 or 6 points) will compete to decide who will be this year’s Bakbakan champion, is slated at the Araneta Coliseum on Dec. 3. Among the top contenders is Thunderbird Winning Team member newspaper executive Rey Briones with an unblemished score of six points.

NFGB PRESIDENTS CUP 8-STAG DERBY

With the 2009 Bakbakan 10-Stag Derby already a resounding success, the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders sets its eyes on its next project – the 2009 NFGB Presidents Cup 8-Stag Derby.

The one-day blockbuster event is set at the Talisay Cockpit in Talisay, Cebu on December 12. The much-awaited stag competition is already being billed as the biggest cockfighting event in Cebu because it will highlight the leaders of the 29 breeders associations affiliated with the NFGB who will be fighting their own bred stags or a selection of birds from among their local association members.

Due to the eagerness to make everything perfect, there was a sorry error in the posters and billboard that came out because instead of 8-Stag Derby, what appeared was 10-Cock Derby. However, considering the time element, there was no chance that the said posters could be recalled and replaced.

Considering that the event is an exclusive competition among the association presidents who are already aware that the derby has a 10-stag format, the promotional campaign was actually intended to inform the cockfighting aficionados, especially the Cebu derby fans.

Whatever, stag derby or cock derby, the NFGB Presidents Cup is an event that is not to be missed.

HAPPY TRIP and well wishes to my sister Dhoya (Leonora Luzong Hoshino) who will be returning to Japan today after a one-week vacation here.

If you are wondering why, just think what’s happening on November 15 and you’ll understance why. Unilab will be donating medicines, for and in behalf of the Univet Nutriton & Animal Healthcare Company – owner of Thunderbird Power Feeds and Thunderbird Power Vet.

SABONG GOES TO CONGRESS (Manila Times Editorial)

We wonder why it has taken this long for the Alyansa ng Sabungero to seek party-list status and congressional representation. The cockpit workers belong to one of the oldest occupations in the country but conditions of life and work have hardly improved.

Critics are wrong to say that the major heirs of sectoral representation are the wealthy cockers and cockpit owners. For every gambler, there are scores of kristo, sentenciador, casador, mananari, largador, matchmakers, takilyador and backyard breeders who depend for a living on betting money and on the tahor they work for winning and making a bundle.

Cockfight toilers claim a national constituency because a cockpit inhabits almost every city and major municipality. It is not known what cause—apart from improving their lot—the sabong workers will espouse in Congress. They might ask for a bigger share of the winnings and the losing cocks.

We heard the party would have for its motto, “Karangalan at Kaunlaran,” because cockfighting has a strong code of honor. Every player honors his bet; nobody cheats. The Alyansa said it hopes to infect the congressmen with its tradition of honesty.

A strong caucus is expected to lobby for the group—sportsmen like Chavit Singson, Peping Cojuangco, Ronnie Puno, Manny Pacquiao and Jun Santiago, among others. Many congressmen breed gamecocks and gamble a lot. National Artist Anding Roces, who has chronicled life in the cockpit, could be expected to write the group’s manifesto.

The entry of alyansa is one of the good news in the party-list scene. We heard the community of artists—writers, painters, composers and others—has applied for membership. They claim Malacañang has marginalized them. They claim under-representation in the boards of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as well as the Appeals Committee in the Palace.

The Comelec commissioners, some senators, opinion writers and other kibitzers find the Alyansa move amusing and the fact that more than 250 groups have applied for accreditation. They should re-read the Party-List Act which says that the state shall promote representation for marginalized and underrepresented Pinoys who could contribute to the drafting and passage of laws that will benefit the nation.

What is good for the cockpit workers could be good for the country. And that goes for the other threatened sectors—like the jueteng collectors, mistresses, smokers, gays, prisoners, call-center workers and housemaids—who are integral to society and who deserve a voice in the important task of lawmaking
