After seven weeks of grueling pit battles all over the country that saw 2,417 entries unleashing their latest gamefowl battle-crosses, the 2009 Bakbakan National 10-Stag Derby closed with two Southern Tagalog entries top-scoring with 9 wins and 1 draw each to split the prize purse of P15 million (out of the P30 million guaranteed cash prize) and the honors of being the Philippine best rooster-raisers of the year.

The record-breaking event is presented by the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders and Thunderbird Ganador Max.

The newest addition in the prestigious list of Bakbakan champions are Boy Tanyag (Red Cobra) who is a member of the young Laguna Gamefowl Breeders Association founded and headed by respected cocker-breeder Sonny Lagon and Ireneo Andal (Igae Bagwis) from the Batangas Breeders Club led by Fred Katigbak.

Championship hopefuls Rene Adao (RDA Farm 2), Kalinga Vice Gov. Joel Baac (JB Patapon), brothers Jo, Jed & Jay Nalupta of UNIGBA and Cagayan Vice Governor Odie Fausto (CVGBA President) all faltered in their last matches as they gunned for their 10^th points and a claim to the title.

The grand finals last Thursday proved to a night for the Batanguenos with Rene Adao and another Batangas native Tony Lasala (NML San Luis) finishing with 9 points.

Matapos ang pitong linggong liparan, kikigan, girian at paluan nang mahigit 10,000 manok-panabong mula sa bagong rekord na 2,417 na kalahok na nagbitaw ng kanilang mga bagong palahing panlaban, ang 2009 Bakbakan National 10-Stag Derby ay nagtapos kung saan dalawang taga-Timog katagalugan ang nagtala ng pinakamataas na iskor na 9 panalo 1 tabla ang naghati sa gantimpalang P15 milyon (mula sa garantisadong premyo na P30 milyon) at ang karangalan bilang pinakamagaling na breeder ng manok-panabong sa taon 2009-2010.

Ang makasaysayan pasabong ay handog ng National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders at ng Thunderbird Ganador Max.

Bakbakan 2009 : The Die is Cast

After 55 provincial elimination events that started in October 10 adding up to a record-breaking 2,413 entries and 18 separate regional semis contests held all over the country, the die is cast with the roster of grand finalists that will compete for the championship on Thursday, December 3.

Only the undefeated entries, those that after 6 matches (3 in the elims & 3 in the semis) have won all their matches or won five and drew one.

These grand finals event at the historic Big Dome will finally decide who will rule this year’s Bakbakan – now regarded as the biggest cockfighting event worldwide.

“Fastest Win” vs. “Fastest Kill”

I am watching the San Juan Coliseum Fights at the Solar Sports channel while writing this column and I had to stop as I counted how many times the word “kill” was mentioned when announcements about the fastest kill prizes for the ongoing Rambulan was being announce.

Like what I have written so many times, it should not be “FASTEST KILL”, because the right term should be “FASTEST WIN”.

Not only that “FASTEST WIN” is kinder to hear, but because “FASTEST WIN” is the appropriate term.

In cockfighting rules, a rooster will be declared the winner if he is able to peck his opponent twice and the opponent not bale to peck back after being give three chances to do so.

There are so many occasions when a winner was able to peck twice, but died after that. And there are also roosters that loses the fight after not being able to retaliate, but are still alive.

When “FASTEST KILL” is being mentioned so many times in succession, it already sounds like kill, kill, kill.
