Officers of the NFGB, including the Presidents of all the associations affiliated with the NFGB will be on hand to answer queries of all those planning to fight in the Bakbakan next year.

Among the NFGB personalities set to grace the event are Sonny Lagon, Ricoy Palmares, Pol Estrellado, Jesry Palmares, Rey Briones, Pao Malvar, Fred Katigbak, Joey Sy, Arnel Añonuevo, Freddie Yulo, Al Garcia, Dr. Gil Sanding, Nitoy Nasser, Victor Sierra, Baba Yap, Vice Gov. Odie Fausto, Baham Mitra, Boy Lechon, Honey Yu, Teng Rañola, Manny Dalipe, Mayor Jess Nalupta, Jess Beltran, Jun Radasa, Bong Gazmen, Engr. Moises Almuete and many others.

“Fastest Win” vs. “Fastest Kill”

I am watching the San Juan Coliseum Fights at the Solar Sports channel while writing this column and I had to stop as I counted how many times the word “kill” was mentioned when announcements about the fastest kill prizes for the ongoing Rambulan was being announce.

Like what I have written so many times, it should not be “FASTEST KILL”, because the right term should be “FASTEST WIN”.

Not only that “FASTEST WIN” is kinder to hear, but because “FASTEST WIN” is the appropriate term.

In cockfighting rules, a rooster will be declared the winner if he is able to peck his opponent twice and the opponent not bale to peck back after being give three chances to do so.

There are so many occasions when a winner was able to peck twice, but died after that. And there are also roosters that loses the fight after not being able to retaliate, but are still alive.

When “FASTEST KILL” is being mentioned so many times in succession, it already sounds like kill, kill, kill.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong
Peoples Tonight (November 25, 2009)

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

“There is something good that you feel that no amount of money can buy”, says one of several volunteer doctors and dentists from the Beta Sigma Fraternity – Manila East Chapter, when asked why he opted to render his services for free when he should be making money in his clinic instead.

It was mission accomplished for the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders which conducted a Medical Mission last Sunday, November 22 at the San mateo Cockpit in San Mateo, Rizal wherein more than a thousand patients – affected by the double typhoon that hit the country recently.

Unilab thru Thunderbird donated medicines in addition to what NFGB has purchased and also invited the Beta Sigma – Manila East Chapter who are known for conducting medical missions almost on a weekly basis.

I personally sought the help of the Betans who have worked with me and my group in two medical missions before, thru the coordination of my good friend Dr. Rex Iwuanyanwu.

The project was also assisted by other companies in the gamefowl feeds and vet industry which donated breakfast, soup kitchen and merienda during the event.

WHO WILL BE THIS YEAR’S BAKBAKAN CHAMP

Will it be Masbate’s pride newspaper executive Rey Briones or the tandem of Generals Acop & Suvia or Charlie Carlos of Marikina or Atty. Darwin Asuncion or Dennis Buison or the duo of Gov. Edgar Ong & Ed Fontanilla or how about the brothers Ricoy Palmares & Jesry Palmares who all have unblemished scores of 6 wins out of 6 matches coming into the grand finals set on Thursday, December 3 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Considering the magnitude of the 2009 Bakbakan, with a guaranteed cash prize of P30 million and a record-breaking field of 2,413 entries, this year’s Bakbakan championship has become doubly prestigious.

Defending champions are Jun Pe of Zamboanga City and John Daguio of Batac- Ilocos Norte who brought to the United Gamefowl Breeders Association its third championship and made it the first ever recipient of the Bakbakan Hall-of-Fame Award.

The two-year old Rizal Gamefowl Breeders Association is well on its way to capture its first Bakbakan crown with 6 grand finalists form their group gunning for the top honors.

“Baka sakaling makuha na ngayon”, says RGBA President Joey Sy.

2010 WORLD SLASHER CUP SET

The Araneta Center, Uniprom, Inc. and the Araneta Colieum announced yesterday the dates for what could be the biggest staging ever of the World Slasher Cup 8-Cock Invitational Derby.

Expecting to break the 207 entries registered in last year’s event, Araneta thru its PR Manager Genny Marcial announced that the January 2101 edition of the “most prestigious cockfighting competition in the world” will again be a five-day event on January 18, 19, 20, 22 & 23.

The internationally-recognized and most respected competition of gamefowls in the planet - the World Slasher Cup is again set to rewrite cockfighting history with more than 100 entries already made their cockhouse reservations as of November 12.

The 2010 World Slasher Cup 2 is hosted by the Pintakasi of Champions with Thunderbird Ganador Max as co-presentor.

Started by Don Amado Araneta in 1962, two years after the historic sports landmark Araneta Coliseum opened, the World Slasher Cup has served as the burning torch for the Filipinos passion for sabong – a unique Filipino culture that was practiced even before Magellan came.

“To win a World Slasher Cup is the best accolade a cocker could achieve”, says defending champion Marcel Julao.

With the huge number of entries expected to see action, all those interested to join are advised to register early.

ALL SET FOR THE NFGB MEDICAL MISSION

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (November 21, 2009)

ALL SET NFGB MEDICAL MISSION

It’s green and go for the scheduled medical, dental and feeding mission set tomorrow from 8:00 – 11:30 a.m. at the San Mateo Cockpit in San Mateo, Rizal which is a project of the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders (NFGB) the office of Gov Jun-Jun Ynares, III M.D. and the Provincial Government of Rizal.

Supporting and assisting the endeavor are Kasama Agri Products & Services, Inc (KAAGPAS), VNJ Distributors, UNILAB which donated medicine thru its sister company Thunderbird Power Feeds and Thunderbird Power Vet.

Also providing valuable assistance are Sabn Miguel Foods Corp; Bmeg, Progressive Laboratories, Goldilocks, Cargill Phils. Inc, Purina, Novarties Healthcare Phils. Inc.; Excellence Gamefowl Specialist, Asenso Pinoy, Sagupaan, Sabong TV, Hataw Pinoy, Tukaan, Pit Games Magazine, Rizal Gamefowl Breeders Association, Batangas Breeders Club, Eastern Visayas Gamefowl Breeders Association, Management & Staff of San Mateo Cockpit, Bgy. Captains of Sta. Ana and Ampid, Parokya ng San Jose de Ampid and the Familia Community Foundation.

In addition to the volunteer medical practitioners from the Rizal Provincial Government and physicians who also have the passion for cockfighting and gamefowl like Dr. Boy Tuazon of Pateros, also extending their services are members of the Beta Sigma Fraternity – Manila East Chapter led by Dr. Buddy Quililan thru the intercession of Dr. Rex Iwuanyanwu.

No less than 1,000 patients are expected to be served, majority of which were affected by the typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

BAKBAKAN 2009 ENTERS HOME STRECTH

After almost two months of more than 70 separate events all over the country, the record-breaking 2009 Bakbakan enters the home stretch with the series of finals competition starting on November 24 & 26 at the Araneta Coliseum; Nov. 27 at Pasay Cockpit; Nov. 30 at Makati Coliseum and back at the Big Dome on Dec. 1.

The grand finals wherein all undefeated entries (with 5.5 or 6 points) will compete to decide who will be this year’s Bakbakan champion, is slated at the Araneta Coliseum on Dec. 3. Among the top contenders is Thunderbird Winning Team member newspaper executive Rey Briones with an unblemished score of six points.

NFGB PRESIDENTS CUP 8-STAG DERBY

With the 2009 Bakbakan 10-Stag Derby already a resounding success, the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders sets its eyes on its next project – the 2009 NFGB Presidents Cup 8-Stag Derby.

The one-day blockbuster event is set at the Talisay Cockpit in Talisay, Cebu on December 12. The much-awaited stag competition is already being billed as the biggest cockfighting event in Cebu because it will highlight the leaders of the 29 breeders associations affiliated with the NFGB who will be fighting their own bred stags or a selection of birds from among their local association members.

Due to the eagerness to make everything perfect, there was a sorry error in the posters and billboard that came out because instead of 8-Stag Derby, what appeared was 10-Cock Derby. However, considering the time element, there was no chance that the said posters could be recalled and replaced.

Considering that the event is an exclusive competition among the association presidents who are already aware that the derby has a 10-stag format, the promotional campaign was actually intended to inform the cockfighting aficionados, especially the Cebu derby fans.

Whatever, stag derby or cock derby, the NFGB Presidents Cup is an event that is not to be missed.

HAPPY TRIP and well wishes to my sister Dhoya (Leonora Luzong Hoshino) who will be returning to Japan today after a one-week vacation here.
